Campaign Disclosures Not On the Web

The City of Encinitas had campaign contribution disclosures on its website for a period of time but has since taken them down. The City justifies this by citing Government Code Section 6254.21, which prohibits the publication of elected officials home addresses.

The City decided against redacting that information and then publishing it.

In the City where Section 6254.21 was written it is a lot easier to see who is funding local campaigns. The City of Sacramento has a good (but not great) mechanism for reporting campaign contributions. They have all the fillings organized and online. Filers are also able to file online at no cost to the filer or the city for the filing. It is also a lot easier fore filers.
